Reactive Recycling

Make PET strapping from recycled content.

Full tensile strength, stable extrusion, batch after batch.

Problems

Recycling and reprocessing strip intrinsic viscosity (IV) out of PET and degrade its polymer structure — and strapping is unforgiving about it. Lower IV shows up as reduced tensile strength and poor elongation, unstable extrusion, inconsistent stretching, and noticeable variation between recycled batches. For a product whose whole job is to hold load, that’s disqualifying.

Opportunity

Strapping is a mechanical-performance product — if recycled PET can’t hold tensile strength and stretch reliably, it can’t be used, and producers stay on virgin. And raising IV alone isn’t enough: unless the IV increase actually translates into maintained or improved mechanical performance, recycled content stays capped in demanding, high-strength strapping.

Higher recycled PET content displacing virgin resin in a high-strength product it’s usually shut out of, with steadier extrusion and less batch-to-batch scrap. Because the IV gain is delivered through linear chain extension, the recycled straps keep the tensile performance the application demands — recycled content without a strength penalty.

Proof

  • Increases IV while maintaining polymer linearity
  • Enhances tensile strength and elongation
  • Stable, consistent extrusion conditions
  • Reduced variability between recycled batches
  • Improved stretching and orientation behaviour
  • Supports high recycled content in PET straps
  • Suited to demanding, high-strength strapping

Reactive Recycling™ modifies the polymer during extrusion, restoring the properties lost in recycling — on existing equipment. For strapping the key tool is NEXAMITE® M992000, a reactive masterbatch built for applications where IV and mechanical performance both matter. It raises IV while maintaining polymer linearity, so the strength gain is real: enhanced tensile strength and elongation, stable and consistent extrusion, and support for high recycled content in demanding straps. The linear chain-extension route is what makes the IV increase translate into mechanical performance rather than just a viscosity number.
